A visit to the historical town centre: A pleasant walk for some and for others, a challenge full of impassable barriers. On this day, however, Český Krumlov is also open to all handicapped visitors. All stairs, whether at the castle or at its museums and galleries, seem to vanish from the town. Visually impaired visitors can "look" at house facades and the more adventurous will definitely enjoy a ride down the river on a flatboat or a raft. Moreover, a fair with products from protected workshops and an mundant cultural programme will certainly enrich this day full of unforgettable experiences.
Handicap Day - Day Without Barriers has been organized by the Kiwanis Club Český Krumlov since 2004. Kiwanis Club Český Krumlov has been established in 2001 and is member of Kiwanis International, an organization joining people who strive to help especially children and young people through own projects. The humanitarian and other Club projects can be of local, national or international nature.
The effort to help the handicapped and facilitate their visit of Český Krumlov came already in 2002. Kiwanis Club together with Unios Tourist Service have mapped the accessibility of attractive tourist spots in Český Krumlov and began compiling information for physically handicapped visitors. An online database was launched in 2003 as well as printed materials for a printed "Guide to Český Krumlov for the Handicapped". The guide was also translated to English and German. The Club has launched the tradition of Handicap Day - Day Without Barriers in 2004.
Handicap Day aims to involve non-handicapped visitors too. This event is not only about demonstrating the difficult position of handicapped citizens and the many barriers they need to overcome in their daily lives but it is especially devoted to motivating the general public to consider how we all can help the handicapped ones around us. During the Handicap Day visitors can see examples of successful projects in Český Krumlov as well as information on projects and products addressing the needs of handicapped persons.
Day with handicap - Day without Barriers
It is not necessary to persuade anybody about the attractivities offered in Český Krumlov. However, Český Krumlov and its historic sights, museums, galleries and other touristic attractions are inaccesible for the disabled. Sinuous, narrow streets covered with uneven pavement of stone, architectural treasures with many stairs and much roughness make for the disabled many barriers which are difficult to get through both in movement and orientation. We are aware of the fact that it is impossible to clear away these obstacles and that nobody can make Český Krumlov the town without barriers, friendly for all handicapped people. In spite of this we think that we are able to do something for the handicapped to enable them to visit the sights and admire the beauty of the historical heritage. If we cannot change the town we can make the town accesible for the disabled temporarily. Therefore in 2004 there was an idea to prepare an event called "Disability Day - Day without Barriers ".
The point of the event "Disability Day - Day without Barriers " is to make the part of the world natural and cultural heritage of UNESCO the town of Český Krumlov and its chosen cultural monuments accessible for the disabled visitors by the assistants and temporary ways at least for one day, this year for a weekend.
