Ladislav Fuks: The Cremator

Immersive dance horror as part of the South Specific festival

The setting of a site-specific dance adaptation of Ladislav Fuchs’ novel, made famous by Juraj Herz’s iconic film version, will be the former beer bottling plant in Český Krumlov. This well-known horror story by Mr. Kopfrkingl, set at the beginning of World War II, gains a new – and perhaps even more terrifying – dimension with this interpretation.
The spectators may move freely through the plot, dance in a casino alongside NSDAP members, while behind them the beautiful Lakmé prepares dinner… Outside the window, a procession of Tibetan lamas passes by, and someone keeps dropping a metal rod all the time … From every corner of the bottling plant, different sounds emerge, and no one knows who is only the spectator and who is driving the action…

The performance involves visual audience participation – we therefore invite you to join us dressed in black and white.

The South Specific Festival is transforming Southern Bohemia into a living stage. Each performance takes place in an environment that is not just a backdrop, but an important part of the experience. Streets, towns, industrial halls, and unexpected corners are transformed into stages, giving the productions a new dimension. This is the largest project  within the framework of „České Budějovice – European Capital of Culture 2028“. You can look forward to more than forty performances by thirty-one artistic ensembles.
