Český Krumlov Baroque Arts Festival
The Baroque Arts Festival is a celebration of early music and brings to life original masterpieces by Baroque composers in the city's historic spaces.
The festival was established in 2008 in Český Krumlov with the aim of reviving Baroque opera and offering audiences a unique opportunity to discover the forgotten art of Baroque composers and musicians. Hundreds of Baroque music lovers from Bohemia, Moravia and neighbouring countries come every year to experience Baroque opera in the unique Castle Theatre.
The Baroque Theatre in Český Krumlov was not chosen by chance for the performance of modern world premieres of Baroque operas. There is no other theatre in the world so perfectly established for performing original adaptations, including period stage performances. The festive moment of the performance of the rediscovered operas is enhanced by the fireworks and illuminations in the Castle Gardens.
In addition to the annual gala premiere of a Baroque opera in a fully staged and narrative performance, the festival offers a series of extraordinary concerts of chamber and church music from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The uniqueness of the festival lies in the authentic interpretation of early music, with ensembles playing instruments using original techniques according to original tuning systems.
