Zoos – Places to See Animals

A true family holiday has to appeal to all members of the family, including (or rather especially) children. And what will delight and interest children? Animals will. Here are some recommendations for viewing animals.

Dvorec Zoo near Borovany

You will find the zoo 4 km from Borovany in the direction of Trhové Sviny. Situated in a pleasant environment surrounded by woodland, which gives visitors (and animals) much-needed peace and quiet, it is a perfect place to relax. Although you wouldn't expect it in such an “inconspicuous” zoo, the animals bred here are mostly from Africa – you’ll see lions, leopards, hippos, baboons, chimpanzees, African birds and many other animals from the continent. But the zoo hasn’t forgotten about other continents – Asian animals include white tigers, buffalo, a Bactrian camel, and more. The zoo’s collection of venomous cobras from the Naja genus is a unique and terrifying attraction. A pleasant bonus is convenient parking and good accessibility to the premises for prams and wheelchairs.

Hluboká Zoo

The South-Bohemian Zoo in Hluboká nad Vltavou celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2019. You will find it (as the name suggests) near the town of Hluboká nad Vltavou, right next to the Ohrada hunting lodge (it is sometimes called the Ohrada Zoo) and on a bank of the large Munický Pond, with the neo-Gothic Hluboká Château rising above the horizon.

Visitors to the zoo can currently see 300 animal species (with approximately 3,000 specimens). Although there are exhibits featuring fauna from Africa, Australia and South America, the zoo mainly focuses on breeding animals of European origin, the temperate zone of Asia, and especially animals “from this country”. These include, for example, the common otter, whose antics in a large glass-walled swimming pool provide a pleasing spectacle for visitors of all ages.

Hluboká u Borovan Safari Park

You can learn about the life of more than 230 animals of 25 species up close in the natural environment of the unique 90-hectare Hluboká u Borovan Safari Park. Stag deer, fallow deer, mouflon and wild boar live in a game reserve, while a thoroughbred horse, quarter horse, domestic donkey, goats, sheep, a rabbit, a guinea pig, an ostrich and more live in stables. A camel, a llama, a yak, a Texas Longhorn, and dexter or dahomey miniature cows, Scottish highland cattle, an American bison, a domestic duck and many other species run around in a paddock.

The park also includes the Naše Farma bistro and offers luxury accommodation.
