Kaplice Music Day | Festival Krumlov

Percussion instruments are like the ancient heartbeat of humanity, the voice of memory, culture, and the human spirit

The sound of drums is one of the oldest means of human expression. In many cultures, percussion instruments are not only a musical accompaniment, but also carriers of myths, social commentary, and ritual communication. Drummers are often prophets, advisors, and chroniclers whose playing can unite a community and convey what otherwise remains unspeakable. Some West African cultures even believe that drummers were the first people in the world. A trio of leading Czech percussionists, graduates of HAMU, Ladislav Bilan Jr., Antonín Procházka, and Matěj Diviš, represent a new era of percussion instruments in all its breadth. Their program combines folkloric inspiration, classical repertoire, original works, and contemporary compositions that expand the technical and expressive possibilities of percussion. The evening offers a journey across continents and styles, from Ghanaian traditions to contemporary experimental music, showcasing the richness of the world that percussion instruments embody.
