Summer at the Stables

The Castle Stables in the Fifth Courtyard welcome visitors throughout the summer

A captivating exhibition whose most striking artefact is the Schwarzenberg coronation coach, used for the coronation of Empress Maria Theresa in Prague and drawn by a ceremonially adorned team of six horses. Remarkably, the harnesses of the grey horses have also survived, together with their richly embroidered velvet caparisons.

Another highlight is the ceremonial sleigh drawn by a horse in luxurious harness. Also on display are surviving caparisons, halters, bits, Baroque saddles and other items of riding equipment.

The princely stables in the 5th Castle Courtyard were built between 1750 and 1752 on the ground floor of the so-called Renaissance House by the Schwarzenberg court architect Franz Jakob Fortin (Fortini), in close proximity to the Castle Riding Hall. Their barrel-vaulted interior once housed horses used by the nobility for rides in the surrounding countryside. To this day, the stables preserve some 22 niches with hewn stone troughs, as well as a richly profiled water basin beside the central window.
