Štěpán Rak and Jan Matěj Rak | concert

The 80th birthday concert

Štěpán Rak (1945) is known primarily as a guitarist, composer and improviser. At the concert he presents himself in all these artistic fields. The so-called "Rak tremolo" has become a household name in the guitar world. It uses the technique of playing with all five fingers of the right hand on one or more strings simultaneously. In 1982, Štěpán Rak founded the string instrument department at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he currently focuses on teaching improvisation. Professor Štěpán Rak's lifelong endeavour is to present the guitar not only as a solo instrument, but also as an orchestra.

Jan-Matěj Rak (1977) is a singer-songwriter, enthusiastic amateur astronomer, great photographer and creative mind full of ideas. He managed the difficult task of arranging the music of Jaroslav Ježek for solo guitar, including Bugatti step or Three Policemen Step. His arrangements of Baroque music, as well as music of Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, are also revelatory. He plays these pieces on a unique historic guitar from 1830.

The concerts of father and son Rak are characterized by originality and always offer numerous surprises. Many of the compositions only take on their final form on stage, so the audience always has something to look forward to.
