Český Krumlov Gallery | Monasteries

A place where history and art come alive in the unique environment of the former Monastery of the Order of Poor Clares. The gallery is located in the three corridors of the monastery's former ambulatory on the first floor, supplemented by the former cells, i.e. the medieval quarters of the nuns themselves.

Collection of illustrations for children

Discover the magic of illustrations for children that are admired by audiences around the world. The works on display represent a cross-section of one of Europe's largest collections of illustrations for children, which the town of Český Krumlov purchased in 2021 from Otakar Božejovský von Rawennoff, co-founder of the Swiss publishing house Bohem Press. The collection of illustrations by Otakar Božejovský offers more than 600 original works by 30 authors from different parts of the world. Selected works, which have been exhibited in prestigious galleries such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, can now also be seen in the monastery gallery.

The Monasteries also feature the Historic Play World, a space full of creative and interactive workshops especially for families with children. The Monastery Museum, revealing to visitors the story of this exceptional site and presenting its rich history, unique architecture and extensive collection of sacred art. Craft workshops where you can get under the hands of a glassmaker, dyer, potter or blacksmith, learn traditional crafts and make your own product. You can relax in the large monastery garden and have a bite to eat in the monastery café.
